2012 Jan Day 4 & 5 – Hualien 2 Days with Driver Itinerary

In my earlier post, I shared on my Day 1 –  Hualien local food hunt.  For this post, I will share on my remaining 2 days with Hualien driver’s itinerary.

You can read my Jan 12 Taiwan itinerary here.

Most people will ask why need 3 days for Hualien ?  One day for taroko gorge is sufficient !  Actually, there are other areas in hualien to explore – you can also visit the east rift valley scenic area and east coast scenic area.

After Hualien, you can also continue to visit Taitung, but I didn’t do it in this trip.  Actually, Yilan, Hualien, Taitung are in the same train line.  Further down will be Kenting.

For this Hualien trip, I hired a driver, Xiao Xi and he planned a 2 day itinerary for me.

Day 1 – 看見鐵道民宿 See the Railway minsu – 慕谷慕魚 Mugumugi – 鯉魚潭 Liyu lake – 雲山水 (yun san shui)  – 白鮑溪拾玉石 Baibao Creek Jade hunting – 悅來瞭望平台(可以看到整個花蓮市景) Farglory Hotel’s viewing platform to view hualien city – 台11線海線 Scenic Highway 11 magnificant coastline – 石梯坪 Shitiping – 北回歸線座標 – 住隱山靓海 Ocean Villa Minsu

For Day 2, it started to rain in the morning so our driver suggested to do another itinerary.

This is our original Day 2 itinerary- 玉長公路 / 193公路梯田景觀 / 南安游客中心 / 林田山 / 大富大農 / 花蓮 (住 迴音谷 Echo Villa Minsu)

Here’s the revised Day 2 – Jade Making DIY 玉石DIY(自費:50/250/450) – 林田山 Lin tian shan Forestry – Japanese Shrine 吉安慶修院 – Coffee at Raphael Cafe – Zi Qiang Night market

Day 1 Itinerary

Our first stop was 慕谷慕魚 (Mugu River Valley (Mukumugi).   This is a restricted place (each day only 600 visitors) like a mini taroko gorge. But i like this place better because there are less people and you can get closer to the waters. The water is really very clear and blue-green in color. You need to climb a little to have a better view of the amazing pool.

鯉魚潭 (Liyu lake / Hualien carp lake) – this lake is quite beautiful. You need to go to the correct spot, otherwise, you cant see the beauty of this lake. The previous time, we came here and we saw that it was just a lake. This time, my guide brought us to the other end. Oh, i would say this lake is beautiful with the mountain landscape behind. You can do boat paddling too.

白鮑溪拾玉石 ( Jade DIY) – Our guide brought us to a river, Baibao Creek where we could hunt for some jades. One tip was that some jades might be stuck underneath the stones. We did manage to find some jades. We went to a factory (Lu Fung) for jade making on the next day. There were some procedures for the DIY. The staff would assess the jades and recommend which jade can be DIY. Actually, a bigger jade would be preferred as we need to cut and shape it. Firstly, the jade needed to be cut into your desired shape, then we needed to slowly smoothen the edges and polish it. The staff would show you how to do and it wasn’t so easy, especially putting your hand so close to the grinding wheel ! There were 4 stations that you need to complete. Anyway, the staff would come over at each station and lastly help you to smoothen it till it is very shiny.

At first, the jade was dull and rough. After the polishing, the jade become so shiny and green. Wow, it really look so different ! That’s fun too – $250 twn DIY. You can also choose the jades from their available pool instead of hunting yourself.

The factory also had a showroom for sales of jade pendent. You could take a look if you like to buy one !

We proceeded lunch to a secluded place called 秘密雞地 (it means secret chicken place).  This food place is only known to the locals.  It is not a posh restaurant, more like coffee shop style.   No excessive decor, but only delicious cusine !  Famous for the BBQ fish (just need to go with a little pepper salt and it’s yummy) and bucket chicken 桶仔雞 ($700twn – didn’t try because we only had 3 persons).  Fried Burdock is also very nice – can’t stop eating this !

雲山水 (Yun San Shui) – this place is a private ecological farm, about 24 hectares. Although we were there in Jan, we still managed to see some autumn leaves too. Hualien people described this place as a paradise area. You can take a stroll around the fantasy lake and it’s really beautiful as you can see mountain and cloud reflection on the lake.

Along the way to Farglory hotel, we saw a big patch of wild flowers.

At the Farglory Hotel’ viewing platform where you can see 360 view of Hualien city.

Along the highway, we saw breathtaking coastline.  Too bad, it was a cloudy day !

We stopped at this cafe which has great endless ocean view !  But too bad, the coffee machine wasn’t working and we didn’t stay after that.

Our last stop was Shitiping. This attraction was pretty near to our Happy Ocean minsu.  Actually, Shitiping is already quite close to Taitung already.

This camping area look great !

That’s the end of Day 1 itinerary !  If you like this post, please click on ‘Like’ button.
